Olympic Studios: A Masterpiece of Set Design

Letícia Vorcaro's Award-Winning Design for SporTV's Olympic Coverage

Letícia Vorcaro and her team at SporTV have created an innovative set design for the Olympic Games coverage, drawing inspiration from the organic curves of Rio de Janeiro. The design, which won the Silver A' Performing Arts, Stage, Style and Scenery Design Award in 2017, showcases a unique blend of agility, fluidity, and dynamism.

The Olympic Studios project was a significant undertaking, requiring extensive planning and coordination. Vorcaro's team designed, built, and supervised all scenic projects for the Olympic Games coverage. The Olympic Studio, located in the Olympic Park, was designed to accommodate several shows with distinct characteristics, while allowing each product to maintain its identity. The Panoramic Studio, built on the twelfth floor of a commercial building overlooking the Olympic Park, offered viewers a more analytical, dynamic, and light look.

The design's unique properties lie in its use of light and space. The team used MDF, styrofoam, acrylic, and leather to create light items that harmonized with the lighting and location of each show. The color palette, the number of reflectors, and the intensity and temperature of the light were all pre-set according to the time of exhibition and the editorial project of each show.

The Olympic Studio, a 170 square meters studio, was designed to articulate five integrated spaces. The Panoramic Studio, with its 70 square meters, housed a 24-hour live transmission and shared what was being broadcasted on the other fifteen channels SporTV offered during the Olympic Games. The transmission involved some changes in the scenery, the substitution of the lighting filters, and a chroma key for the use of virtual images.

The design process was not without its challenges. The biggest operational challenge was to build sets in both studios that caused minimal impact in terms of change of scenery and furniture storage. The team's research aimed at finding materials, colors, and technological solutions that could reduce the reflection of the scenic light on the glass used, without any interference in the natural reflection of the elements.

In conclusion, Letícia Vorcaro's design for the Olympic Studios is a testament to the power of innovative design in enhancing the viewer's experience. The project's success is a testament to the team's dedication to creating a set that is not only visually stunning but also functional and adaptable to the needs of the shows it houses. The Silver A' Design Award is a well-deserved recognition of their outstanding work.
